Jeff Conolly has proved to be a true connoisseur when it comes to picking
up obscure tunes before giving them the unmistakeable
Monoman touch. Whether they're covers of the fifties, sixties,
seventies or eighties(!), the man obviously has great taste and deserves
all the credit for sharing his discoveries with us. I mean, who knew of
The Sonics or The Wailers before DMZ reintroduced their great songs to
the world? We might still be stuck in the utterly lame seventies if it
wasn't for them. Think about that! Later, when he formed his new
band Lyres, he really started digging up and covering some of the most
fantastic songs that lots of people didn't even recognize as covers.
No small feat, I tell ya. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mich & Tich - Pete
Best - Tony Sheridan, oh yeah, Lyres covered them all.
Here's a list of 100(!) original songs that DMZ and Lyres
released cover versions of.

Notes:
· If
there's a second songtitle mentioned in red parentheses, for example
(Happy Now), that means that this is an alternate title that is used on
the DMZ/Lyres record sleeve. Sometimes this was done deliberately but more
than once it proves to be the result of incorrect guesswork by the record
company, especially when bootleggers are at work.
·
The writer credits are those that appear on the original artist's
record. Some are stated incorrectly on the DMZ/Lyres (bootleg) records.
·
Title of record: Apart from the original first issue I've also mentioned
re-releases and compilation appearances. This list is not complete, nor
was it meant to be! However, it shouldn't be too difficult to trace
down these reissues. Illegitimate or bootleg reissues are only stated if
there's no legit reissue available at the moment (so I tried!).
·
The year that the originals were first issued is the first one mentioned
and it's only stated if I'm absolutely certain. No guesswork
here. The only noteable exceptions are Ain't That Loving You Baby
which was recorded in 1955, Boston which was commited to tape in 1964 but
remained unreleased until 1969 and Raw Power, the original version of which
was recorded in 1972 but wasn't released until much later. The original
version of Here's A Heart was recorded in 1966 but wasn't
released until 1999!
Of course, I'm well aware that this list is not complete and
that some mistakes might have crept in. This is where you come in. If you
can fill in any additional information or if you can correct any mistake
present, I'll be
more than happy to hear from you! Please send all your comments to:
